The ASNT Certification is widely regarded as the foremost credential in the field of nondestructive testing (NDT) and has set the industry standard for nearly 50 years. Achieving certification through ASNT offers numerous benefits, including industry-wide recognition, enhanced career prospects, and a heightened sense of confidence in one’s inspection skills. ASNT Certification Services, LLC, a distinct legal entity and wholly owned subsidiary of ASNT, is responsible for overseeing the certification, recertification, and accreditation processes.
The ASNT NDT Level II certification program was developed to provide standardized Level II written examinations that employers may use to satisfy the general and specific examination guidelines of paragraphs 8.3 and 8.4, respectively, of Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A.
The ASNT Certification Services LLC NDT Level III program offers third-party certification for nondestructive testing (NDT) personnel. It validates their knowledge of technical principles related to the NDT tests they perform, witness, monitor, or evaluate. Aligned with Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A, this program serves as the primary certification for ASNT Certification Services LLC. Established in 1977, ASNT NDT Level III certificates are globally recognized
ASNT widened the scope of its certification offerings to include Level II certification. The examinations for the ACCP Level II, include General, Specific, Practical, and Instruction Preparation examinations in five NDT methods (MT, PT, RT, UT, and VT). The ACCP program provides a central certification system for NDT Level II personnel that meets or exceeds the training, experience, and examination requirements of CP-106: 2008.
ASNT expanded its third-party Level III certification to cover Practical and Procedure Preparation (PP) examinations in five NDT methods (MT, PT, RT, UT, and VT). The purpose of ACCP Certification Program, is to provide the NDT industry with personnel who have achieved a high standard of NDT qualifications by examination, and independent, transportable NDT certifications.
The Industry Sector Qualification – Oil & Gas (ISQ-O&G) program is an advanced practical qualification exam without the full program cost. The purpose of the ISQ program is to provide the oil and gas industry with NDT personnel who have demonstrated competency in practical application of a specific technique through hands-on performance demonstration qualification examinations.
The ASNT Employer-Based Certification (EBC) Program was designed to provide the NDT industry with a registry program that ensures NDT service providers and inspection agencies meet the minimum compliance with either SNT-TC-1A or CP-189 through the employer’s Written Practice.
The Industrial Radiography Radiation Safety Personnel (IRRSP) program provides third-party radiation safety certification that meets the certification requirements of both Title 10 Part 34 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10CFR34), and the Suggested State Regulations for Control of Radiation (SSRCR: Part A, General Provisions; Part E, Radiation Safety Requirements for Industrial Radiographic Operations; Part H, Radiation Safety Requirements for Non-Healing Arts Radiation Generating Devices; Part T, Transportation of Radioactive Material).
Three IRRSP certification examinations are available:
Acceptance of the IRRSP radiation safety certification within a state is solely at the discretion of the state in question. However, states that do recognize “approved certifying entities” will accept the IRRSP certifications because ASNT is an approved Certifying Entity. Questions regarding acceptability should be directed to the department governing the state’s radiation control program.
The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) certification is a credentialing process that validates the expertise and competence of professionals in the field of nondestructive testing (NDT). It is important because it ensures that NDT personnel meet industry standards for quality and safety, enhancing the reliability of inspections and the integrity of structures and materials.
ASNT offers several types of certifications, including the ASNT NDT Level I, Level II, and Level III certifications, each representing different levels of expertise and responsibility. Additionally, ASNT provides specialized certifications such as the ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP), and certifications for specific methods like ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), magnetic particle testing (MT), and more.
To obtain an ASNT NDT Level III certification, candidates must meet certain education and experience requirements, typically including a combination of formal education in a related field and hands-on NDT experience. Additionally, candidates must pass a series of written exams that test their knowledge of NDT principles, methods, and standards.
Preparation for an ASNT certification exam can involve several steps, including studying ASNT-recommended materials, attending formal training courses, and gaining practical experience in NDT methods. ASNT also provides study guides, practice exams, and reference materials to help candidates prepare for the certification exams.
ASNT certifications are typically valid for five years. To maintain certification, individuals must apply for recertification before the expiration date, which may involve providing documentation of continued professional experience, completing additional training or education, and possibly passing a recertification exam. The specific requirements for recertification can vary depending on the certification level and method.
